Brief and requirements

Cartware has been the technical service provider for SportOkay since the company was founded in 2013. The client was won through a conventional pitch; existing high-calibre references and, ultimately, technical expertise in Magento 1 were what convinced them.

It was clear from the start of the project that we would be dealing with a high product count. The e-commerce platform's database currently holds 470,000 products, at excellent load times.

Already in the concept phase, the presentation of 3D product images was to be a core feature of the platform, and after more than 11 years it remains a distinctive quality of the system.

As is equally common among SME and industrial clients, a bidirectional full integration of the newly introduced Microsoft AX system was to be implemented. Magento 1 was to serve almost exclusively as the shop frontend.

Solution and outcome

The platform was built in just under 5 months. The client's goals were met one hundred per cent and without compromise. On a solid technical foundation delivered by Cartware GmbH, SportOkay was able to grow from a startup into a mid-sized company with close to 40 million in annual revenue.
We are certainly not solely responsible for that success, but without a solid foundation modern e-commerce is hard going.

Core features and functionality

  • ERP integration (Microsoft AX) across all business processes, with fully automated import and export functionality via API and email reporting
  • Parallel Magento indexers
  • Automated translation system based on Google Translate for customer enquiries and reviews
  • Variant selection and add-to-cart (colour, size and so on) directly from the category listing
  • ElasticSearch implementation
  • Bespoke, responsive frontend stack with TypeScript-based components
  • 3D product image presentation and fast delivery of the compressed 3D images via a content delivery network (CDN)
  • Bespoke product configurator, for example for ski sets at individual package prices
  • Conversion-optimised one-step checkout
  • Cost contributions through promotional allowances via dedicated brand presentation
  • Voucher system with PDF vouchers
  • Performance optimisations to do justice to the high number of store views and products

Challenges

The greatest challenge was tuning the system, as it was being built, for the load expected if it succeeded. For over 11 years we have accompanied the client's project as an extended workbench. Through the drive of our CTO and his development team the platform has been kept current and remains, to this day, a technically modern platform. Long familiarity with the platform means technologies can always be swapped out and components renewed with minimal intervention.

A long-standing partnership

A strong foundation is the key to a stable structure.

In 2013 we started out with SportOkay.com in a small warehouse. Ten years on, customers find more than 18,000 sporting goods in the online shop across outdoor, bike and mountain sport.

Cartware GmbH has accompanied SportOkay.com successfully since the start on the way to the top of European e-commerce!

The sheer number of items in stock, internationalisation for 27 countries in currently six languages, the innovative 3D presentation, hundreds of thousands of orders and the need for a high degree of customisation keep setting us exciting tasks, which we solve together!
